The implementation of the One WASH Program (Phase II) has shown promising results.
The Ministry of Water and Energy is currently evaluating the One WASH Program (Phase II) in collaboration with stakeholders starting from February 25, 2025, in Adama City.
In his opening speech, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Asfaw Dingamo, State Minister of Water and Sanitation, emphasized that the primary goal of this platform is to review the achievements of the One WASH Program (Phase II), identify existing gaps, and address issues crucial for the program’s upcoming third phase.
The National One WASH Program in Ethiopia aims to meet the WASH milestones set forth in the Sustainable Development Goals by integrating various projects into a cohesive initiative.
This approach seeks to enhance service delivery across rural, urban, and pastoral communities, as well as in schools and health institutions, while optimizing resource utilization.
Over the past decade, significant strides have been made in providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene through the collaborative efforts of the Ethiopian government, development partners, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. Notably, access to clean water has reached 79.12% in urban areas and 70% in rural regions, with basic sanitation coverage at 42%, reflecting substantial progress.
However, many citizens still lack access to these essential services. H.E.Ambassador Dr. Asfaw highlighted several challenges, including planning and implementation constraints, the need for new partnerships, and ensuring the sustainability of the program.
He also pointed out the impacts of climate change, capacity building needs, and monitoring gaps as significant obstacles that require due attention.
To overcome these challenges and achieve even better outcomes, continued commitment from all stakeholders is essential. The Ambassador noted that the discussions would align the sector's development with the country’s strategic priorities, paving the way for the implementation of the third phase of the One WASH Program.
Participants actively engaged in the discussions, raising questions, sharing experiences, and identifying areas needing improvement. The session was moderated by HE Mr. Motuma Mekassa, the Minister's Advisor, who provided valuable insights and responses.
The workshop brought together representatives from federal ministries, stakeholders, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and regional bureaus, all dedicated to advancing the WASH agenda in Ethiopia.
