Ethiopia Participates in Mission 300 Day at the Africa Energy Indaba
Cape Town, South Africa – March 5/2026 Ethiopia participated today in Mission 300 Day, held on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa. The event brought together ministers, development partners, and private sector representatives to review progress and accelerate efforts to expand electricity access across Africa.
Mission 300, led by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank, aims to provide electricity access to 300 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030 through coordinated reforms, increased investment, and stronger public-private partnerships.
Ethiopia is part of the second cohort of Mission 300 countries and has developed its National Energy Compact as a roadmap to accelerate electricity access, mobilize investment, and strengthen the sustainability of the power sector. Ethiopia’s Compact was formally endorsed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly back in September 2025 in the presence of H.E. Taye Atske Selassie, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
During the Mission 300 stocktake plenary, H.E. Dr. Eng. Habtamu Itefa Geleta, Minister of Water and Energy, shared Ethiopia’s progress and priorities under its National Energy Compact.
The Minister highlighted the Government’s ongoing commitments and efforts to expand electricity access across the country through investments in generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructures. Ethiopia continues to build on its strong renewable energy base, primarily hydropower, while working to diversify its energy mix and strengthen the resilience of the power system.
Minster Habtamu also emphasized the reforms being undertaken to improve the efficiency and financial sustainability of the power sector and to create a more enabling environment for private sector participation in energy infrastructure.
The Minister further noted Ethiopia’s growing role in regional power integration, with electricity exports already taking place to neighbouring countries and additional interconnections under development to strengthen regional energy cooperation.
He also highlighted Ethiopia’s broader environmental and climate commitments, including the Green Legacy Initiative, as well as the country’s engagement in global climate discussions in the lead-up to COP30. Ethiopia is set to be the venue for COP32 in the year 2027.
Ethiopia will present its National Energy Compact this afternoon at the Mission 300 day, outlining the country’s roadmap to accelerate electricity and clean cooking access and support sustainable economic development.
