September 29, 2025, the implementation support mission for the Ethiopia Flood Management Project, funded by the World Bank and executed by the Ministry of Water and Energy in collaboration with the Ethiopia Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) and the Ethiopia Meteorology Institute (EMI), was initiated. The event was attended by His Excellency Mr. Motuma Mekasa, H.E. Minister's advisor at the State Minister Rankl.
During the mission's kick-off, Mr. Temesgen Ketema, the Coordinator of the Ethiopia Flood Management Project, delivered a presentation on the project's 6 months status report from the last mission held on April.
In his presentation, Mr. Temesgen Ketema emphasized the activities undertaken including civil work progress, consultancy services, and basin-level studies of the Awash River and Rift Valley Basin lakes. Additionally, he provided an update on the status of the 42 km right-side Amibara Embankment.
The presentation also addressed safeguard criteria, procurement status, monitoring and evaluation conditions, and other related matters, including the work status of EDRMC and EMI.
Following the presentation, the World Bank team raised suggestions and inquiries regarding grievance management mechanisms, social safeguard criteria, procurement status, and related issues for further clarification.
Subsequent to the discussions, H.E. Mr. Motuma Mekasa emphasized the importance of focusing on sustainable solutions, particularly through in-depth studies of the Awash River, Omo Gibe River, and Rift Valley Basin lakes, as these are crucial for achieving long-term resilient flood protection. He also highlighted the necessity of including safeguard planning for the Amibara Embankment in the project plan. Furthermore, H.E underscored the need for immediate solutions to procurement delays within the Ministry of Water and Energy, EDRMC, and EMI to ensure the project's success.
The mission is scheduled from September 29 - October 07/2025, including a site visit to Arba Minch for the Kulfo River flood protection!
Participants in the mission include representatives from WoWE, the World Bank, EDRMC, and EMI.
